Service

Service is an incredibly important part of the Montessori curriculum.

Our goal is for students to develop ecological consciousness, community awareness, and empathy for others.

All students are taught to reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost. Our preschool classrooms commit to the care of their classroom space and the environment immediately surrounding the school. Our elementary classrooms choose a community outreach focus for the year and a specific organization to support, then students and the teachers work together to develop service contributions focusing around each organization’s needs and goals.

In the last year, we have donated many boxes of clothing, toys, books and housewares to Esperanza Shelter for Battered Families, Boys and Girls Club of Santa Fe/Del Norte, and Santa Fe Public Library.

This year we’ve worked to support the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society, New Mexico Wildlife Center, and El Castillo Nursing Home.

Desert Montessori School is also honored to maintain the section of the Santa Fe River at the corner of Alameda and St. Francis through the Santa Fe Watershed Association’s Adopt the River Program. We meet on designated Sundays at 10 AM and clean the river until it is free of trash (we do a lot of splashing around, too).
