Every child here at DMS learns about themselves in relation to their place and shared responsibility to the greater world around them. Social responsibility is a critical element of our school’s mission statement.
Each classroom in our school believes in teaching the elements of The Montessori Peace Flower which include:
We believe that all four areas in harmony create a “Spirit of Peace” in our students.
Because we believe deeply in fostering the a Spirit of Peace, we’ve decided to participate as a school in the 2019 Climate Strike on September 20th. Detailed info can be found here.
New Mexico Youth United for Climate Crisis Action (Yucca) has organized this action as part of Week of Disruption called for by people around the world — led by 15-year-old Greta Thunberg.
How will DMS Participate?
Our Preschool and Kindergarten classrooms are reading picture books, going on nature walks and having discussions on the importance of caring for our environment. Students learn very early that caring for their environment both in the classroom and beyond is an important part of their identity and place within the larger world. This will continue as a regular part of their curriculum.
Our Elementary classrooms (E1-E3) will walk down to the capital building around 10:15 to join the strike and voice their concerns about our environment and climate change from 11:30 to 1:30. They will eat lunch right after. We’d love to have as many parent chaperones as possible. Teachers will be reaching out soon with permission slips and a call for parent chaperones. Students will also be making signs for the march on September 13th.
Please note: all students will be given the choice of participation. If any child does not wish to participate they will be able to stay home or here at school. Here at school they will spend their time as as a classroom helper in the preschool.
The elementary students here at DMS are very passionate in their beliefs and care for the environment, and they deserve to have their voices heard. The goal of the Strike is for New Mexico’s youth to peacefully voice their truth to the people in power who can make change happen and to teach the power of individual and collective advocacy.
If you have any concerns about our participation as a school or your child’s participation in the Climate Strike please reach out to me right away. If you’d like to volunteer as a parent chaperone we’d love your help and support. Feel free to contact me with any questions at email@example.com.
